The Modern Grand Tour is a journey through the cities, ideas and works of art that shaped Western culture.
The programme unfolds over several years, with each city forming its own chapter in the story — from Athens and Rome to Istanbul, Florence, Venice, Madrid, Vienna, Paris, London and beyond.
And you don't have to have been there from the beginning.
Join the journey at any point.
If you discover The Modern Grand Tour after a city has already been explored, you can simply catch up.
All previous online lectures are available as recordings, allowing you to go back to the beginning of the story — or explore the cities that interest you most — before joining the programme live as it continues.
So whether you join us at Athens, Rome, Venice or somewhere further along the route, you can always find your way into the journey.
Each city tells a story.
Before each city visit, we explore its history, art and ideas through a series of live online lectures.
These sessions give you the context to understand what you are about to see: why a particular city became important, how artists responded to it, who commissioned the art, and what its buildings, paintings, sculptures and collections tell us about the society that produced them.
The recordings mean that you can experience this preparation even if you weren't there when the lectures originally took place.
Then, if you wish, come and see it for yourself.
The online programme and the city visits are designed to work together, but neither requires the other.
You can follow the Grand Tour entirely online, join individual city programmes, or combine the lectures with one or more of our in-person visits.
The choice is yours.

Lecturer’s Biography
Aliki Braine
Aliki Braine (b. 1976, Paris) is an artist and art historian. She studied at The Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford, The Slade School and The Courtauld Institute, London where she was awarded a distinction for her theses on 17th century painting. She has been working for The National Gallery for 25 years and teaches for Christie’s Education, The Wallace Collection, The Arts Society and numerous private clients. Aliki is also a practicing artist who taught at Camberwell College of Art and Westminster University and who regularly exhibits her work internationally.
