<image:caption>The churches, palaces, and museums of Venice hold a unique place in the story of art because they reveal how beauty, power, and commerce could combine to shape an entire city. Built as a maritime republic whose wealth depended on trade across the Mediterranean and beyond, Venice used art and architecture to project prestige, stability, and magnificence. Its grand palaces, public buildings, and richly decorated churches became settings for some of the most celebrated achievements of the Renaissance, while the city’s openness to the East brought distinctive materials, colours, and visual influences that set Venetian art apart. Collections and sites such as the Doge's Palace, Gallerie dell'Accademia, Basilica di San Marco, and the palaces lining the Grand Canal show how art functioned as civic identity, diplomatic display, and private prestige. Venice was also the home of masters such as Titian, Tintoretto, and Giovanni Bellini, whose works transformed the use of colour, atmosphere, and spectacle in European painting. To study Venice is to understand how a city of merchants and statesmen became one of the most visually extraordinary centres of art in the world. <image:title>City Experiences - The Story of Art and the Cities that Helped Write It. - The Grandest of Grand Tours Overview of the Course</image:title>
<image:caption>Art history is often encountered through books, lecture rooms, and museum walls. Yet great art was never created in isolation. It was shaped by cities, by power, by faith, by wealth, by ambition, and by the people who chose to commission, collect, and preserve it. This programme offers a remarkable opportunity to place the story of art back into its true context: the places where it was made, the societies that shaped it, and the individuals who helped define its legacy. Beginning in September 2026, this unique two-year journey will explore 12 extraordinary cities, combining expert-led online learning with immersive in-person cultural experiences. It is designed for those who wish to deepen their understanding of art in a richer, more meaningful way—through direct experience, thoughtful interpretation, and the pleasure of shared discovery. A New Way to Learn the History of Art Rather than studying art only as a sequence of movements or names, we follow the cities that gave rise to it. From the civic ideals of Athens to the imperial grandeur of Rome, from the Byzantine and Ottoman worlds of Istanbul to the Renaissance brilliance of Florence and Venice, from the dynastic collections of Vienna and Madrid to the museum culture of Paris, each destination reveals a different chapter in the story of art. You will come to understand not only the works themselves, but why they were created, who paid for them, how they were displayed, and what they meant to the societies around them. How the Programme Works Each city experience begins with a series of three live online lectures, providing the historical, artistic, and cultural framework before travel. These are followed by a 2–3 day city immersion, where participants explore museums, architecture, collections, and urban spaces with expert guidance. This combination allows learning to move seamlessly from screen to city, from theory to lived experience. Participants may choose to join: The full 12-city programme over two years Individual online lecture series Individual city experiences Whether you wish to undertake the complete journey or join selected chapters, the programme is designed to be flexible and accessible. Expert Lecturers Chosen for Excellence and Accessibility All sessions are presented by experienced and highly regarded lecturers, personally selected not only for their knowledge, but for the way they make art education clear, engaging, accessible, and inclusive. No prior academic background is required. The programme welcomes seasoned enthusiasts, curious beginners, and lifelong learners alike. Our aim is simple: to make serious art history enjoyable, welcoming, and intellectually rewarding. Why We Created This Programme Many people love art but feel excluded by academic language, rushed museum visits, or fragmented learning experiences. We wanted to create something different. A programme that opens the subject to a wider audience. A programme that values curiosity over credentials. A programme that allows people to continue learning throughout life while travelling with purpose and depth. This is art history not as an abstract subject, but as a living story told through cities, collections, people, and ideas. An Invitation to See Art Differently To stand in the streets where artists worked. To enter the buildings where patrons displayed power. To understand the collections that shaped taste and memory. To connect great works of art with the human stories behind them. This is more than travel. More than lectures. More than tourism. It is an invitation to experience the story of art where it truly happened. We Keep a Medium Group Size We keep our group sizes between 8–12 people to ensure the best possible experience. This range creates a balance between a lively social atmosphere and smooth, well-organized logistics. Smaller groups can feel limited in energy, while larger groups make it harder to stay connected, hear the guide, and move comfortably through the city. Keeping groups in this range allows everyone to engage, ask questions, and fully enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or crowded. Launching September 2026. <image:caption>The museums, palaces, and archaeological sites of Rome are fundamental to the story of art because they preserve the legacy of antiquity and the civilisation that transformed visual culture across the ancient world. In Rome, sculpture, architecture, urban planning, and public monument became instruments of power, memory, and imperial identity. Temples, forums, triumphal arches, baths, villas, and portraits were designed not only for beauty, but to communicate authority and shape how an empire understood itself. The survival and rediscovery of these antiquities profoundly influenced later generations, inspiring artists, architects, and collectors from the Renaissance onward. Today, collections such as those in the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican Museums, and sites including the Roman Forum, Colosseum, and Pantheon reveal how the material culture of Rome became a foundation of the Western artistic tradition. To study Rome is to encounter the enduring power of antiquity and to understand how the ancient world continued to shape the art of later centuries. <image:caption>The museums and palaces of Vienna occupy a central place in the story of art because they preserve one of Europe’s most significant dynastic collecting legacies: that of the House of Habsburg. Over centuries, the Habsburgs used art not only as a symbol of taste, but as an instrument of imperial power, diplomacy, learning, and prestige. Through marriage alliances, territorial expansion, patronage, and acquisition, they assembled extraordinary collections of paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, armour, manuscripts, and objects from across Europe and beyond. These collections now survive in remarkable settings where they reveal how royal collecting helped shape the modern museum. Vienna allows us to see how art moved from private dynastic possession to public cultural inheritance, making the city essential to understanding the relationship between collecting, empire, and the formation of the European canon. Through a combination of expert-led online learning and immersive city experiences, the programme places great works of art back into their original cultural context—revealing the people, power, ideas, and institutions that shaped them. Each individual course and city experience can be enjoyed on its own, while also contributing to a wider journey across the cities that defined the story of art. Find our more about The Story of Art and the Cities that Helped Write It programme here Overview The museums and royal palaces of Madrid hold a vital place in the story of art because they preserve the collecting legacy of the Spanish Habsburgs and later the House of Bourbon, two dynasties that used art to express monarchy, empire, faith, and cultural authority. During Spain’s imperial ascendancy, royal patronage brought together extraordinary collections of painting, sculpture, tapestries, armour, decorative arts, and objects gathered through diplomacy, inheritance, and global exchange. These treasures are now encountered in institutions such as the Museo del Prado, one of the world’s great painting collections, and the Royal Palace of Madrid, where court splendour and dynastic display remain vividly present. In Madrid we can trace how collecting shaped national identity, elevated artists such as Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, and transformed royal possessions into public institutions. The city is therefore essential to understanding how art served both empire and monarchy, and how those collections later became part of Europe’s shared cultural inheritance.</image:title>
